Should home-schooled students be allowed to compete in public sports?
Many parents today do not trust the U.S education system and choose to take matters into their own hands and homeschool their children. These children learn in a much different, with their parents as a teacher. They miss out on the privilege to meet new people and make friends to develop social skills, which is why they should be allowed to compete in public school sports. This is their way of making friends and not to mention sports can teach kids the greatest of all life lessons. The most important lesson sports can teach someone, and has definitely taught me, is that if you want to achieve something, you must work for it and you have to work harder than anyone else. For example, if you want to win the state championship in any sport, you have to suffer by pushing yourself to the point where you physically cannot push yourself any more. You can’t just show up to games and win, championship teams practice and practice, striving to do better than they did before. This not only applies to sports, but in real life. If you want to be successful and be at the top, you have to work more diligently than your competitors to be the best. It takes a lot of effort, energy, and mental toughness, but when you do push yourself, in the long run it is all worth it. Kids who are homeschooled could potentially miss out on this significant learning this at a young age which can put them far ahead in life.
Being homeschooled, kids obviously spend a lot of time at home and need a reason to get out of the house. Sports are a perfect thing for homeschooled children because it one, keeps the kids out of trouble and two, puts them in a safe environment where they be occupied outside of the home. In every home there is tension between siblings, parents, and other family members, so sports can be a great way for them to get away from everyone and relieve stress. Also, if they play sports it would keep them from doing bad things and making bad decisions which can be prevented with sports. If a kid does not go to school with other kids their age, then how will they get a chance to get out of their house and make friends as well?
Making friends is the most important part of growing up. Homeschooled children have a harder time meeting new people and developing the social skills needed to succeed in life. When a child plays sports they are going to make friends and some of them being the best of them. The friends I have made from playing football are the ones I have been friends with since the pop warner days and still am to this day. I believe every child should play at least one sport for this reason, it is good to be apart of a team and creating a family like bond with others.
The things you learn in sports will shape you into a much better person and just because a child is pulled from school to be taught at home does not mean they should miss
out on public sports. If anything, kids who get homeschooled most likely get a better
education than most kids due to the flaw in the education system so I do not blame parents
for doing this. They deserve the privilege to participate in athletic activities and earn the
benefits you get from playing sports.
